The solid food introduction stage is an exciting time for you and your little one. There are so many new tastes and textures to discover and appreciate. This is a first-time opportunity to introduce your child to food favourites of the future.
Of course, the foods you offer your child should be both nutritious and delicious. You have so many choices and quite a lot of information to sort through. The first rule is pretty simple: Don’t panic! Another general rule is to go for variety. A wide range of tasty and healthy foods is the best way to help your child appreciate good food.
To get you started, here are some unique food ideas to try, inspired by some of the world’s top chefs. (Recipes are only suitable for ages 7 months and above.)
Chicken, Avocado & Basil
Scoop out half of one avocado into a bowl and mash it up with a fork. Tear in some fresh basil leaves and add cooked, shredded chicken in any size you want. (Leftover roast chicken works perfectly.) At this point you can add a quick drizzle of olive oil just to even up the mixture. This is good to go as is, or you can blend it with a hand-held mixer.
Cauliflower, Apple & Sweet Potato Puree
This is a yummy choice for the early weaning stage. It’s easy, too! Just peel and chop up an apple, small sweet potato and some cauliflower. Put it all in a pan and steam until nice and tender. Drain, then pop it all into a blender and puree. You may find that at early weaning, a looser consistency is better, so you can always add a little water.
Carrot And Parmesan Pastina
An adventurous choice for a child who’s exploring new textures and flavours. In fact, toddlers and even older children will love it too! For a child’s meal, take a small handful of pastina and add it to about a cup of boiling water. When the water is mostly absorbed, grate a small carrot into the pastina and cook for a few more minutes until the carrot is nice and soft. Take it off the heat and grate in some parmesan cheese, then stir. Delicious!
